Fireworks frighten horses

    • Set off fireworks well away from livestock or horses in fields or stables
    • Keep your horse in its normal routine
    • Risk assess your stable yard and plan to limit disturbance
    • Ensure you find out if there are any displays planned nearby
    • Warn local organisers, councils and schools that there are horses in the area
    • Organise your plans in advance
    • Remain calm and positive yourself as horses will sense your unease
    • Keep your horse in a familiar environment
    • Safety for everyone is the key – do not put yourself in danger
This advice is available as a downloadable poster, along with further information from www.horseaccidents.org.uk.
The BHS also supports the Blue Cross guidelines on Fireworks and Animals which is available at www.bluecross.org.uk and in paper format from both the Blue Cross and the BHS.

Research Help Request
I am currently doing a PhD in complementary therapies and how they are used on horses in Wales.
I would appreciate it if you would be kind enough to forward my questionnaire to the BHS members in Wales please.  Every one returned will result in a donation to an equine welfare charity, so if your members could in turn forward it on, I would be very grateful and so would horses in distress.
Thanks so much in advance

Pilgrims' Ride

The British Horse Society in North Wales is working on opening and connecting up some of the ancient Pilgrim and Drovers routes going East to West over the roof of Northern Wales and down to the sea at the furthest tip of the Lleyn Peninsula. Pilgrims Trail Cymru is approximately 150 miles. Similar to other BHS national bridleway networks, the basic trail, places to leave horse transport, accommodation, farrier services, vets etc will all be listed in a booklet, also the whole trail will be suitable for walkers or cyclists if they  wish to use it too. If you want to add your name to the list of services or accommodation on the trail, or can help with old information about the route, please contact sec@bhswales.org.uk

Take Care with Haybales

A woman killed in a freak farm accident is believed to have been hit by a bale she was unlodging to feed her horse.

Charlotte Louise Conroy-Taylor, 45, of Brookhouse, Lancashire, was found on a barn floor by her 12-year-old daughter, Zara. The mother had broken her neck.

She was taken to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary but was pronounced dead on arrival (31 May).

The accident occurred at Beamount Grange Farm, Slyne-with-Hest, where Mrs Conroy-Taylor kept her horse. A post-mortem has been carried out, but the exact cause of her death will not be released until and inquest is held later this year.

The police and health and safety executive have ruled it to be a "tragic accident". No further investigations will be made.
